In this short story, McEwan-Alvarado presents a family whose members
support each other in their struggle to improve their working, economic
and living situation. Though the son would rather work with his father
in the groves, both his parents insist that he go to school because they
believe that getting a good education is necessary in order to leave the
hard life of the bracero (day laborers) and
enter the life of the middle class. The main theme of this story, therefore,
is the importance of an education.
